With the recent Healthcare bill passed into law..and then the government "running" banks and the auto industry..I've heard a lot of people calling for the government to stop..in the name of SOCIALISM. A quote from a friend.."sounds like a push towards socialism to me." Here's my take..
First of all..its not socialism. I really don't think most americans have no clue what socialism is. They just know it's something super terrible. First of all..we have socialism already in this country..as does every modern democracy. Social Security is socialism...so is the Marine Corps..so is the US Postal Service..snail mail. Every modern industrialized western democracy is a hybrid with elements of socialism in it. It's not evil. The Democrats had done a rotten job of selling health care. There is a lot of good stuff in that health care..but to have it be characterized..to let people characterize it as socialism was a big mistake from the beginning.
The Senate bill that was already passed was not that bad. Yes..it's not what a lot of people would have liked..but it does cover 30 million more people. You can't get thrown off for a pre-existing condition. It saves money. It does reduce costs.
Medicare is solvent until 2026..that's not a bad start. You can't solve legislation usually in one fell swoop. There's usually a good start..then you go back and you get some more.
People..its not SOCIALISM. It just comes down to the "people" not being into "Barry" (Barack). Barry..they're just not into you.
Maybe we need to think about PATRIOTISM more than SOCIALISM. We need to be more patriotic about something other than war. The people who are blocking health care for the 45,000 americans..who die every year because they're not covered..which is way more than we lose in Iraq and Afghanistan..is that really patriotic?
Peace out my HALEYUNNS!
I am glad you have such an optimistic out look on this reform. However, do you know that more people die every year of treatable/preventable diseases, such as cancer, in countries with government run healthcare. Statistics are surprising. Americans may have more people diagnosed with some diseases, but fewer of those diagnosed actually die from it. All the money you speak of being saved, comes from people not getting diagnostic tests and treatment needed. I agree healthcare needs reform, but government run anything is THE bad idea from the start. By the way, in the end who is going to pay for it? It will be interesting to see how much our health insurances premiums increase with this reform. It will also be interesting to see just how many doors of small business that are closed. Small business are struggling as it is, I hate to see the cost they will have to pay to insure employees (or people without jobs) based on this reform. Imagine the domino effect, companies pay more to insure employees, then they pay their employees less to help cover the costs. In theory it all sounds good, on paper, well....., we will see.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your view. It was truly enlightening. Thats why I chose to do blogs. I do realize that my opinion is just that. I keep an open-mind to whoever makes a comment. I can say..that some comments have altered my view on things at times..which is healthy for me. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteJust to add to my prevous post, people without insurance are among the first to seek care. I will admit the wealthy are also some of the first to seek care. Wealthy people and those without health insurance are not worried about deductibles and how many days the doctor will say they have to stay. Middle of the road people with jobs, or the retired (on medicare) living on a strict budget are among the last to seek care. This is because they worry about going to the doctor and having to pay copayments, buy prescriptions, undergo expensive testing, and Lord forbid, be admitted to the hospital. I see it every day. At work and with my own family. Do you know people choose between medicine and food. If anything, this government run healthcare will make that worse. Maybe people will have insurance, but can they afford what comes with it?
ReplyDeleteSounds like our politics (progressive-sympathizing moderate) are not too far apart, old friend.
