I have tried to watch the Olympics..really. Try when I'm channel surfing. Try when I'm laying in bed. Even try having it on as a night light for my sleep world. Just isn't happening. However, last night I did see either some kind of figure skating highlight or event..and heard the dreaded word..SPORT. I laughed..laughed again..then figured I had to get online to blog my thoughts. Figure skating IS NOT a sport. Gymnastics IS NOT a sport. Boxing IS NOT a sport..unless someone is knocked out or can't continue. Have you figured out my reason? I can't label a competition a sporting event if the out come is determined by subjective JUDGING. Sport is the ultimate physical competition..generally one on one, team versus team. Sport usually has a winner and loser(s) based on 'physical success' over your opponent..that is determined by the individual themselves, not a judge. With that said..the Olympics should be about sport, not exhibition or theatrics. Hey CURLING stays..SKATING goes!
Peace out my HALEYUNNS!
All due respect..., I could not agree less! Those athletes determine their own score by their ability, or lack of ability, they have trained to acquire! By your measure, chess would be a sport..., NOT! I say curling out, skating stays! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm not questioning ability, lack of. I'm disputing any event that requires subjective scoring. If they have been train to acquire these scores..then why is there always some dispute over the judges and/or scoring?? What about the Russian skater who were more physical/athletic with his routine then the other guy who was more theatric? Let the skaters have the career where they perform to a crowd with the TITANTIC music playing in the background. It truly is a graceful art..not sport.
ReplyDeleteBTW..Chess wouldn't be a sport. I mention physical competition.
ReplyDeleteYou mean lifting and moving those heavy pawns isn't physical :)... LOL..., I see what you are saying about scoring being opinionated by judges, but look at basketball and football. Is there not always some discrepency about fouls.., what was called, what wasn't? Those types of differing opinions can alter the outcome of a game..., and they have nothing to do with how many points went in the hoop or under the goal. Keep your blogs coming..., they make people think about what we are watching and hearing, and their importance to our every day...! And who knows, maybe you will think about (or even change)your opinion based on a comment you get. :)
ReplyDeleteFor the record..if it weighs less than a longneck bottle of beer..its not heavy lifting. :-)
ReplyDeleteSeriously, thank you for the comments. I want feedback to challenge my thinking. And IF I need to change my opinion..I will do so accordingly. Promise..
